Michael Coleman is an award winning director and cinematographer. For over fifteen years Michael has focused on making films about audio and music. His behind-the-scenes work has been featured in such films as director Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, director Brett Morgen's The Rolling Stones: Crossfire Hurricane, director Cameron Crowe and Producer Morgan Neville's, Pearl Jam Twenty, director John M. Chu's G.I. Joe: Retaliation, director Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, director J.C. Chandor's, All is Lost, director Michael Bay's, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, director Nimrod Antal's, Metallica: Through the Never and Aerosmith's multi platinum film, You Gotta Move. Past and ongoing clients include Apple, Lucasfilm, Dolby Laboratories, IMAX, Hamilton: An American Musical, THX, Sony Electronics, Folio Fine Wine Partners, Golden State Warriors, San Francisco Giants, Another Planet Entertainment, Meyer Sound and BroadwaySF. Michael's work has been recognized as a top director on Vimeo with 12 of his films selected as Staff Picks and has accumulated 30+ millions views through his online work. Shortly after graduating college with a degree in filmmaking and sound engineering, Michael started his career with legendary music producer, Jack Douglas. As Jack's assistant in Boston, he joined the world-renowned rock band, Aerosmith, documenting their 2004 blues album release, Honkin' on Bobo. Aerosmith released the "making of" DVD, You Gotta Move, featuring never-before-seen live footage in the studio which was certified 4X platinum and the music album was certified gold. In 2009, Michael launched the SoundWorks Collection, an exclusive and intimate video series focusing on individuals and teams behind-the-scenes, bringing to life some of the world's most exciting projects. The SoundWorks Collection video series has featured interviews with directors Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, James Cameron, Mel Gibson, Robert Zemeckis, Brad Bird, Darren Aronofsky, Edgar Wright, Matt Reeves, Mark Andrews, Lee Unkrich, Joseph Kosinski, and many other leaders in the film industry. In 2016, Michael directed the short film, John Muir - Coming Home which was inspired by the writings of naturalist, author and early advocate of wilderness preservation John Muir. The film was featured on Sierra Club, Outside Magazine and San Jose Mercury News including a special engagement at John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CA. Later that year, Michael reunited with director Patrick Shen as an associate producer on his film, In the Pursuit of Silence which is a meditative feature film about the value of silence, our relationship with sound, and the impact of noise. In 2017, Michael directed his debut feature documentary, The Art of Listening, which is about the journey music takes to reach a listener's ear, from the intent of an instrument maker and composer, to the producers and engineers who capture and preserve an artist's voice. The film was produced with Sony Electronics and premiered at SXSW, followed by a 2-year feature on Youtube accumulating 1.3 million views. Michael is currently in production on his next feature sound documentary.
