Carlitos Ruiz Ruiz was raised in the Puerto Rican theater company Teatro del Sesenta. After getting a BFA in Filmmaking from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ruiz started working as a director for music videos and commercials. With his short film thesis Paper Ball, Carlitos won the jury prize at the San Juan Cinemafest, Best Short Film at the Hamptons Film Festival, Best Short Film for the School of the Art Institute Fellowship and The Weisner Award for Distribution. Consequently he started making commercials for Direct TV, Mazda, Subway, Verizon, Coca Cola, Coors Light, Pepsi, Blockbuster, among others. His dynamic and unique storytelling positioned him as one of the Top Rated directors in Puerto Rico, winning the Silver Award at the festival Ojo de Iberoamerica in 2004 as well as two Gran Cuspide (2004 and 2005). In 2007, Carlitos and partner Mariem Perez debuted their first feature film Lovesickness at the Tribeca Film Festival, which won several international awards including Best Opera Prima, Audience Award, Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress. Their latest project De Puerto Rico para el Mundo. Is a beautiful documentary that narrates the history of the Island's music, the artists who brought it to the mainstream and its contributions to the world. The story is told through the tales of Rita Moreno, Luis Guzman, Rosie Perez, Roselyn Sanchez, Justina Machado, Freddy Rodriguez, Amaury Nolasco, Lisa Vidal, Ismael Cruz Cordoba and Jose Feliciano. After going through the performance track at Groundlings and UCB Los Angeles, Ruiz joined forces with Mariem Perez to develop the Latino Sketch Comedy Theater Company, Comedia de Improvpios, with the focus of nurturing up and coming comedy talent for the Latino market.
