Derrick Sims grew up in Kingsland, Arkansas. At 19, while studying journalism at university, he directed, photographed, and edited a short-subject, American Civil War film that was chosen to play alongside Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil (1999) at the Aerospace IMAX Theatre in Little Rock, Arkansas. The success of that film led to work on his first feature, War Eagle, Arkansas (2007). In 2008, he served as director of photography on The River Within (2009), his first feature as cinematographer. Three years later, Sims returned to Kingsland, Arkansas to make his directorial-debut with Come Morning (2012). He also wrote, photographed and edited the film. Come Morning (2012) premiered at the 2012 at the Austin Film Festival, and in 2013, the Oxford Film Festival awarded Sims with a special jury award for his cinematography. He and his partner own Fabled Motion Pictures and Fabled Effects House. They are now in New Zealand completing post production on their next film The Perfect Host: A Southern Gothic Tale (2018).
