Jay Maisel is an award winning New York City based photographer who was born in Brooklyn on January 18th, 1931 and had already received his first gallery show, of black and white work,having only started shooting the year before, at age 24 in 1955.His education included: Abraham Lincoln High School, 3 years at the Cooper Union studying design and painting, and Yale University where he learned from both Bauhaus master Josef Albers and philosopher/engineer Buckminster Fuller.Maisel's successful commercial career includes such highlights as the cover photo for the best selling Miles Davis jazz album Kind of Blue and five Sports Illustrated swimsuit covers.He has had at least five publications on his work and has offered his expertise in courses.For almost fifty years, Maisel lived in a 72 room, 6 floor family mansion, the Germania Bank building at 180 The Bowery in lower Manhattan, where he accumulated a collection of treasures.
