Champion surfer Candy Calhoun was born in 1945 in California. Her father Tom Calhoun was a skin diver and spear fisherman while her mother Marge Calhoun was a champion female surfer. Candy grew up in San Diego, California. After finishing fourth in the Makaha International Surfing Championship contest in 1962, Calhoun went on to win the 1963 West Coast Surfing Championship contest and, as a member of the USA Surfing Team, placed third in the ISA World Championships in Peru in 1965. An avid body surfer, Candy was the first woman to body surf both the Pipeline in Hawaii and the Wedge at Newport Beach in Southern California. Her sister Robin Calhoun is also a champion surfer. She was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in 2010.
