Timothy Shary is the author of research on movies about age and gender representation, primarily in American cinema, including "Generation Multiplex" (2002), "Teen Movies" (2005), "Youth Culture in Global Cinema" (2007), "Millennial Masculinity" (2013), and "Fade to Gray" (2016). He was the featured scholar in the IFC documentary series "Indie Sex" in their episode "Teens" (2007). He grew up in Pennsylvania, went to college at Hampshire, film school at Ohio U., and earned his Ph.D. at U. Massachusetts. A new edition of "Generation Multiplex"- revised and expanded up to 2013- was published in early 2014. He co-edited the anthology "The Films of Amy Heckerling" (2016) and is now co-editing a volume on John Hughes. His latest book is "Boyhood: A Young Life on Screen" (2017), about the 2014 Richard Linklater movie.
