Matthew was born in Adelaide, Australia and moved to Sydney as a teenager. He received his MFA in Film and TV Production from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He lives in London and has has completed his first documentary feature The Other Fellow, about real men around the world named James Bond, and is in development on his second film.
