Julien was born in San Diego on February 4th, 1975, the son of Bertrand and Denise Hug, owners of two of San Diego's premier restaurants, Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe, Bertrand at Mister A's in San Diego, and Augusta Modern in Palm Desert, California. He was raised in both San Diego and in Montauban, France. He graduated from Torrey Pines High School in California with the Class of 1993. He was raised in the restaurant business. His father opened and operated several elegant eateries and always involved Julien. At the age of 14 Julien started as dishwasher and worked his way through every position to finally become Maître d' at Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe, a position he loved. He was the perfect host, charming, respectful and accommodating to guests. Tall, dark and handsome, he was often told he should be an actor or male model, but he preferred running the restaurant, looking after his patrons and didn't seem interested in a career in film. He was also a automobile enthusiast, golfer and motorcyclist. He also enjoyed hiking and was an avid sky-diver with over 700 jumps to his credit. He did enjoy being a contestant on the television show "The Bachelorette" in 2009 and made some lasting friends on the show. He was on his way to Palm Desert to help his parents open a new restaurant "Augusta Modern" when he pulled off Highway 74 to hike a remote trail, where he was to end his own life. His body was later found near the mountain top. He was only 35 years old. He left notes in his car for his parents, his girlfriend of 2 years Jennifer Bell and his co-workers. According to his family, he internalized everything and quietly suffered from severe depression. He leaves behind a loving family who is feeling the tremendous loss of this talented and wonderful young man. His funeral was held on November 12, 2010 at the Village Church in Rancho Sante Fe, California, where his parents shared his suicide note. In part he wrote: "I'm sorry to do this. I feel terribly about the grief I've caused. I've suffered from severe depression for years. I feel awful and don't know how to cope. If life's not enjoyable, why stick around? This will hurt you. I'm sorry to have to do this to you. I love you both tremendously. You guys did it right. I feel only love for you mom and dad, but I'm terribly sad everyday. I hurt. People will think I took the easy way out. I say I took the smart way out. Tell everyone I love them. Make sure everyone knows that I just want to be in peace. I love everyone."
