Kevin Molony

Kevin Molony is a New Orleans vocalist, composer and filmmaker known for We Shall Not Be Moved New Orleans (2008), Marigny Tumble (2016) and Race (2010). Kevin began creating original films in high school. His first play was produced in 1994. He has also acted and directed for the stage and published short stories and literary essays. He started singing publicly many years ago in a gospel church choir in the 9th Ward. Since that time he has trained his voice across four octaves most days of his life. Kevin's original compositions are fed by streams of gospel, jazz and world music. He writes arrangements for many instruments and voices, from opera chorus to jazz ensemble. When producing recordings he's fond of saying (with a gleam of self-irony), "I compose with notes on a page, but I orchestrate with sparks of divine fire." Which is to say that he's blessed to work with some of the most gifted and soulful improvisational musicians in the world. Same thing when he's directing a film project. He scripts it down to the shot list, then assembles a cast and crew of talented artists who can improvise in the moment. With film as with music, Kevin works extensively in post-production to sculpt the performances, sounds and imagery into a compelling journey. Some kind things have been said about Kevin's voice in both song and story, but perhaps his most valuable gift is his ability to inspire the artists with whom he works to give off some of their most brilliant light.
