Rebecca Thomson is a Tasmanian based filmmaker who lives in nipaluna/Hobart with her husband, three miniature humans, chooks, bees and extensive costume collection. Rebecca has been involved with all aspects of filmmaking from writing, producing, and directing through to shooting, editing and distributing. Rebecca has made numerous films to date, including off the wall genre shorts Cupcake: A Zombie Lesbian Musical, Slashed and The Jelly Wrestler, which combined, have screened at more than seventy film festivals worldwide including Frameline San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Fest, New York City International Film Festival, and won many awards along the way. In 2019 Rebecca completed the Screen Australia funded A Hairy Problem, about female body hair, which has had close to a million views online. Rebecca's short film I Am Undone was selected to be part of an anthology feature films A Night of Horror: Volume 1, produced by Deadhouse Pictures. Rebecca is one of the key filmmakers behind Women Of The Island, a multi-award winning web series of short documentaries telling the stories of the fascinating women who inhabit the island of Tasmania. The series has played to sold out audiences all over Tasmania as part of Ten Days On The Island 2019 as well as being an Official Selection for many international festivals as well as winning Grand Jury Prize at Berlin Web Fest 2019, Best Cinematography at LA Webfest and Best Direction in a Doco Series at Baltimore Webfest. In 2020 Rebecca enjoyed collaborating on a number of music videos for songwriter/songstress Monique Brumby, and has just completed a beautiful series of animated documentaries called There Is No I In Island that reflect on the fears and dreams of the Tasmanian community during Covid-19 lockdown. Rebecca is in writing mode, working on a webseries of original fairytales that she is developing with creative producer Catherine Pettman. Rebecca runs a highly shonky but super fun festival in her own backyard named Bec's Backyard Film Festival!
