Surya is a contemporary Indian director who has worked extensively across television commercials, music videos, documentaries, and short films. She graduated from College of Fine Arts, Bangalore, and studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. Surya has a unique sense of her craft, as evidenced in her feature documentary, Right Forward, which chronicles the journey of 12 young girls from a Dharavi slum to San Francisco to participate in a soccer camp. Surya has also written and directed the Marathi short film Arre Baba, a heart-rendering, coming-of-age tale about the relationship between a father and his daughter. Surya is one of the directors of Train Station, a collaborative feature film made by 40 directors from different parts of the world, which premiered at the Berlin International Festival in 2018. Currently, she is completing post production work on her upcoming documentary, Amar Katha, an anthology of stories set in Kashmir during the Amarnath Yatra. Surya also runs an advertising production house called Footloose Films.
