Sumedha Karmahe was born to Mr. Gyanesh Karmahe and Mrs. Sarla Karmahe of Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. Her father is a retired sports-teacher at a local school. Sumedha was unable to speak a word even after reaching the age of two and half years. Her mother had to take her to doctors but the little girl soon began to sing even before she could start to speak properly. She quickly became famous in her native town for her singing. While growing up, Sumedha occasionally performed with Rajbharti Orchestra, Rajnandgaon, participating in every singing competition held in her town and state and winning most of those, yet she still never considered singing as a career. Eventually it took the encouragement from the legendary music director O P Nayyar, who spotted Sumedha as a great singing talent of the country when she won the Saregamapa Chhattisgarh competition in 2004, to make her consider singing seriously. She started to dream of becoming a pop-star. Not only that, she also decided that she would do her best to develop her own singing style, distinct from that of anyone else. In that pursuit, she continued taking advice from different vocal trainers at different times and she is still doing that. For her higher education, she moved to the state of Chandigarh in 2006. But when she was due to appear in her first year final examination, auditions for Zee Saregamapa Challenge 2007 took place and she was selected. She had to move to Mumbai. The rest as they say is history! Zee Saregamapa Challenge 2007 went on to become one of the most popular reality shows of Indian television history and Sumedha Karmahe became a household name in India. After the success of Saregamapa Challenge 2007, Sumedha went on to tour the West Indies, USA and Canada performing in a series of concerts. She performed in New Jersey, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto and some other big cities of USA and Canada. Sumedha also performed in concerts in Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Belgium, Dubai, China, Mauritius, Malaysia, Zambia, Thailand and Ukraine. She did the prestigious IDEA Rock Concert Series 2008 along with leading Indian playback singer Shaan. She performed in 14 concerts of this series in 14 cities across India. Sumedha has already performed in hundreds of stage shows! Sumedha's popularity can easily be gauged from the fact that she has been invited as a guest performer in a number of television serials to give those serials good publicity. She was also offered lead roles in many television serials by different television channels and lead roles in a few movies too. But Sumedha is very dedicated to her singing and she declined those offers so that she can give all her time to singing only. Her playback singing career has started off well with her first solo song Chakhri from the Santosh Sivan directed movie Tahaan, earning her rave reviews from the critics. She has already done playbacks in six different languages.
