Julia Hammett-Jamart forged her career in the Australian film industry. She worked firstly in film and television production, directing and producing projects for national broadcast (SBS Television and Film Australia), before expanding her professional engagement to include screen policy and education. Julia's first documentary focused on the use of music therapy with developmentally delayed children. It was broadcast by SBS-TV, received extensive media attention and earned her a place at the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School. She subsequently made numerous short films, which achieved theatrical release and received accolades within Australia and at international film festivals. From 2004-2008, Julia held senior policy positions within the Australian government's film funding agencies (Policy Officer, Manager Governance & Strategic Planning). She was a member of the Transition Team with responsibility for overseeing the merger of the Film Finance Corporation, the Australian Film Commission and Film Australia into the current single agency, Screen Australia. Since obtaining her PhD in Media and Communications, Julia has published numerous articles on screen policy and presented papers at high profile international conferences and institutions, including the US Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS), and the Australian and New Zealand Film and History Association. She has been an invited speaker at Kings College London and the British Institute in Paris, and has held visiting fellowships at the Université Paris III and the University of London. In 2009 Julia relocated to France, where she continues to produce and direct documentaries and has co-founded the Coproduction Research Network
