Arati is an engineer and the former head of DARPA, an organization she led from July 30, 2012 until January 20, 2017. She is the former head of National Institute of Standards and Technology where she was the first ever female head. Arati emigrated from New Dehli, India to the US at the age of three. She grew up in Lubbock, Texas. Arati earned her bachelors of science in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University in 1979. She would go on to earn a Masters in Science in electrical engineering and a PhD in applied physics from the California Institute of Technology.
