Born in the Dominican Republic, and having been raised from an early age in NYC, Alvin's family moved to the Midwest where his interest in filmmaking was encouraged by a teacher in middle school. and subsequent practice with Super 8 and 16mm cameras. A fine arts graduate having studied graphic design, printmaking, and photography, he taught himself cinematography with borrowed 16mm cameras. As a writer-director and cinematographer on his first feature, the independent and improvised French-language film, The Whirlpool, he garnered praise at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2012 and at FEST: New Directors New Films in Portugal where the film was nominated in the Best Narrative Feature category. Recent works include The Nude, a carefully staged study of a figure art model at work, which won Best Feature Documentary at the 2018 Innuendo International Film Festival, and In The Moon's Shadow which premiered at MIFF in 2019 and features scenes performed and filmed during the 2017 Great American Eclipse.
