Fred Edelstein grew up in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia and went to Overbrook High School. After graduating Penn State with Bachelor of Arts degrees in journalism, film production and television production. He began his newspaper career at the Elmira Star-Gazette in Elmira, NY. In 1977, he began his career covering the NFL as the Eagles beat writer for the Philadelphia Journal. In 1983, he founded the Edelstein Pro Football Insider. In 1989, he became ESPN's first ever on-air NFL expert analyst from the print media and was a cast member of the NFL pregame show NFL Gameday and appeared regularly on SportsCentet as well as covering the annual NFL Draft. In 1995, he founded his own nationally syndicated show, Direct TV's Pro Football Insider with Fred Edelstein. In 2021, he became the Chairman of Kill The Soda Machine Productions and is the writer and executive producer of the feature film,The Letter.
