The tension is palpable when influencer MADELEINE catches librarian FRAN outside the off-license buying a cheap bottle of wine. At Mary's front door they meet KAREN, an air headed dog walker, holding a half-filled bottle of Chianti, (her heel got caught in the escalator). They enter, greeting MARY, a posh, mature wine-expert. Madalaine mocks Fran's cheap wine to them all and Mary tells Madalaine off for missing the point. The wine's flowing thick and fast, and before they know it it's time for Madeleine's pudding wine. Fran thinks it's disgusting, while Karen quite likes it. Madeleine is insulted - it was made by Gerard Depardieu. A violent argument erupts over whether or not Hugh Grant or Gerard Depardieu is a better actor. Mary explains to a confused Madaline that Fran takes this personally because of her mother's delicate history with Hugh Grant rom coms. Karen insists she's met Hugh Grant, which leads to hilarity. However Karen is deadly serious and takes a stand - she'll bring Hugh next month. Fran explodes at Karen; how could Karen lie so insistently about a subject so close to Fran's heart? Glasses smash in each of their hands in a shocking end to the night. Next month, Madeleine and Mary are alone. Fran arrives with an expensive bottle, saying she's not drinking. Karen arrives - with a man, who has the same bottle of wine Fran brought last month. Mary closes the door on him for bringing that awful bottle. Was it Hugh Grant...? Doesn't matter.
