Sedat Simavi was born in 1896 in Istanbul where he received his education respectively in Saint Joseph French School and Galatasaray High school. He completed Galatasaray High School in 1912 where he also served as a history teacher. He published humor magazines such as Inci, Diken and Karikatur. Along with publishing new magazines like Yedigun and Karagoz, he directed the Pence and Casus which are considered as the first feature-length movies of Turkish Cinema. Simavi was one of the founders of Turkish Journalists' Association and became the president of it till 1949. He started to publish one of the most famous newspapers of Turkey called 'Hurriyet' in 1948 and wrote some plays like 'Hurriyet Apartmani' which was filmed in 1944 by Talat Artemel.
