This documentary gives us the death toll of civilians and military personals that died in the Second World War. At the first glance, the film with brutal numbers of the conflict just looks like dark and cold, but the Director shows us that it is possible create an outstanding narrative in a very peculiar way.

Untersharführer Ludwig Herckel (Leone Frisa), is a devoted and patriotic soldier of the elite 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. As the action begins, we follow a small group of experienced infantry soldiers in combat against Soviet forces. An explosion knocks Herschel unconscious and he wanders the woods in a daze. He is met by another soldier who happens to be from his same town back in Germany. Now posted to the western front, Herschel witnesses the decline of the army group, loss of comrades in arms, and multiple acts of war crimes in the handling of POW's for both sides.

A college student from a wealthy family, Zhou Weiguo, is determined to join the Chinese army and defend his country after witnessing the cruelty of war and the atrocity of the Imperial Japanese Army. Zhou Weiguo's excellent performance at the Military Academy earns him the opportunity to study abroad in Berlin, where he meets an equally talented and ambitious Japanese officer, Takeshit Toshi. Takeshit Toshi's hospitality and dislike of the Japanese aggression eventually reverses Zhou Weiguo's initial loathing of him. Returning to the battlefield in China, Zhou Weiguo joined the Battle of Nanking but was forced to retreat and abandon the city. Wounded during the retreat, Zhou Weiguo is coincidentally saved by a Communist squad and taken to a nearby Communist base. Initially repelling the Communist Army, Zhou Weiguo develops a new understanding of them after encountering various down-to-earth Communist soldiers and officers and decides to stay. Zhou Weiguo was promoted steadily after winning major battles until Takeshit Toshi was dispatched to the area to fortify the Japanese force. After strenuous efforts, Zhou Weiguo's force eventually surrounds Takeshit Toshi's squad in a battle, and Takeshit Toshi refuses to resist. Lamenting his once friendship with Zhou Weiguo and growing tired of the War, Takeshit Toshi requests Zhou Weiguo to end his life as an aggressor and enemy. The Imperial Japanese Army soon loses the War, and the story ends with a Chinese victory.
